A new report suggests that Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models may feature a more durable, anti-reflective display. The rumor, which comes from a reliable source that spoke with MacRumors, revives speculation about an advanced screen coating that was previously thought to be canceled due to production difficulties.
According to the report, Apple suppliers have managed to solve yield issues with the new scratch-resistant, anti-reflective glass, making it feasible for mass production. The technology is now expected to be included on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, but will not be available on the standard iPhone 17 or the new iPhone 17 Air model.
The new display layer is said to be tougher than the current Ceramic Shield and, for the first time on an iPhone, will add an anti-reflective coating to cut down on glare. It's a similar approach to the Gorilla Glass Armor on Samsung's latest phones, like the recently unveiled Galaxy S25 Edge, and a feature Apple has so far reserved for its Mac and iPad displays.
This potential display upgrade is just one of several hardware changes rumored for the 2025 lineup, which is also expected to feature a fresh palette of color options. For the iPhone 17 Pro models, reports have pointed to a new "Sky Blue" finish and a possible copper or orange shade, which could coincide with a rumored switch back to an aluminum frame.
The standard and Air models are expected to get their own distinct colorways. According to one leaked document, the iPhone 17 may come in Black, White, Steel Gray, Green, Purple, and Light Blue. The iPhone 17 Air, which is rumored to replace the Plus model, may be offered in Black, White, Light Gold, and Light Blue.
